Calli Gold is the third and youngest child in her very active, competitive family. This is the story of how she learns to accept herself and her own strengths rather than feel as if she does not belong in her busy family. Calli’s character is well drawn and children will recognize their own doubts and struggles in her family and school life. Calli’s parents are written as stereotypes but serve the author’s purpose in contrasting Calli’s gentle, quiet ways with the fast-paced styles more common in today’s family scene. This seems an especially good book to use as an example of how biggest and fastest and “most” is not always best. There is a marvelous subplot in which Calli befriends a younger child who has been cast as a misfit by both adults and other children. The overall message celebrates truth and simplicity. Humor makes the lesson almost painless.
