Someone once asked me what my favorite non-fiction book is. It is this book, hands-down. This is a jumping-off point for any new gardener and a huge resource for those highly experienced. The book is written in a friendly, respectful, down-to-earth way, but does not skimp on information. It is frequently the book that I sit down with in the mornings when I have my cup of coffee- you can open to any page and start reading and learn something.
This book is in sections. Section I is general gardening info: history of growing foods, how to make gardens, basic soil chemistry, tools, and disease or insect information. The second section is a highly detailed summary of every vegetable or herb widely grown. (Please note: there are no fruit tree, berry, or esoteric herb summaries included). Each plant is given subheadings: A short but sweet History of the plant in documentation (for example, this line taken from the history of lettuce section: "...Americans have been eating it -about 26 pounds per person a year- ever since colonial times, despite the 16th century warning that children born of lettuce eaters 'do become idle foolish and peevish persons'"), Deciding What To Grow, Site&Soil, How To Grow, Potential Problems, Harvesting, and Special Notes. General nutritional information is given.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone interested in gardening, food, or history. It is a wonderful book.
