When a loutish cad gets what’s coming to him, the results are amusing and a little scary. Ms. Thompson captures a cat’s-eye view of its world with precision and delightful humor. She also credibly shows the redemption of a caddish lady’s man—all in the space of one week.

With the threat of magic loss and the possibility of true love in the offing, the romantic stakes are of a different caliber in this novel. Once again, we are treated to the appearance of Dorcas and Ambrose Lowell, the meddling but well-meaning witch-and-wizard duo from Big Knob. They form a more peripheral but pivotal role here. Instead of actively working their powers to bring two lovers together, they operate in a mostly advisory role. But their help is crucial and this reader was happy to see them again.

Given the altered milieu, you’d expect some awkwardness. But Ms. Thompson proves once again that her magical formula can be moved from the small town to the big city with nary a hitch. It’ll be fun to read the continuation of this series.

This book was really fun & I loved all the characters! I really enjoyed the plot line in this book & watching how the relationships between the characters developed, especially the relationship between Anica & Jasper. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

“Too bad you don't have cable. We could test him by putting him in front of ESPN with a bowl of beer and a package of Cheez-Its."
Jasper hissed his disapproval.
Anica laughed softly. "I don't think he appreciates your stereotyping him like that."
"Oh, bite me Jasper."
It was a tempting thought.
Lily stood. "Enough of this. Let's raid your closet and find us some hot dancing duds." She continued down the hall.
Jasper glared after her. Lily was so wrong about him. He didn't like Cheez-Its. Onion rings went way better with beer.”
