A near wordless ,minimal movie which lacks the deadpan humour which is normally in Aki Kaurismäki's movies. The titular character's dreary work , dull social life, yearning for companionship, the rejection from parents and suitors... all the emotion (mostly misery) can be read on Kati Outinen's face.
Working in the realm of Fassbinder (and even Bresson), Kaurismaki amazingly manages to hold his own. I’ve seen fewer things more heart-wrenching in cinema than the girl crying while watching the Marx brothers.
A good example of minimalist film making.
