This movie is incredible and the actors are extremely convincing in their roles. During the film, you feel as though you are legitimately watching real people go through this horrible volcanic eruption. Thankfully they aren’t and this is just the result of some pretty spot on acting. Whoever watches this film is anxious, heartbroken, and at the edge of their seat the entire film waiting to know if everyone will be okay. This film is an adventure as you see a family struggle to make it through the eruption of a volcano with the help of a scientist who came to check out the volcano before it erupted. This film was beautifully done and is definitely a classic.

Oh my gosh...
Remember those horrendous "Disaster Movies" from the 70's. Well this is a revival, only worse!! (Yes, they said it couldn't be done, but they actually did it.) Aside from that, almost every line in this film is filed under: things no one would EVER say in real life, given the characters, the situations, & the context. EVER!! Add to that the usual PC caricatures of the usual characters. (e.g. the standard pretentious "adult"/children; My favorite: the 10 yr old boy jumping in the land rover, with his 7 yr old sister, driving --yes, driving; though he couldn't reach the peddles-- up into an erupting volcano, to save gramma. He of course has no problem, where someone like Mario Andretti would have had an incredibly difficult time just keep control of the vehicle on those dirt roads, with NO visibility, let alone the earthquakes, ash falling so thick the windshield wipers aren't effective, and the total and complete chaos.)
All this leads me to ask one question:
Are all these people that gave this 3, 4, and yes, even 5! Stars, out of their minds!!!!!!!?????!!!!!!
(I'm sorry, but I must be from a different planet.)

One might simply expect a movie of destruction. Instead it has depth and feels good and was enjoyable to watch.

"Whatever you do don't look back!" Even if you don't look back, I think the volcano is gonna get you. Part of the disaster movie mania of the 90s, which also included "Twister," "Deep Impact," "Armageddon," and, of course, the other volcano movie, cleverly called "Volcano." In this the small town of Dante's Peak is threatened by a volcano, but the town is slow to act for fear of scaring off tourists, which recalls "Jaws." Pierce Brosnan is a not very convincing scientist and Linda Hamiton is the town mayor. So really they should've called it "James Bond & Sarah Connor vs. Volcano." The volcano gives a great performance. The destruction is enjoyable in a cheesy sort of way. Entertaining for what it is. Brosnan and director Roger Donaldson would work together again on "The November Man," which I don't think has any volcanoes.
