Mate writes with sensuous imagery, love and appreciation of the joys of finding his dream house, feasting with neighbours and discovering himself a native in this foreign land. If you love life, a must read.

This was the first travel lit book I read, and I've been hooked ever since. It's a funny, touching, beautiful story of relocating to rural Italy, hunting for the perfect house, restoring it, and getting to know the neighbors. Hilarious anecdotes about home repairs, helping out with haying and harvesting grapes, getting to know the surrounding area, and of course, some great "lost in translation" bits that happen to anyone learning another language.
