Terry Brooks is a pretty bad writer. I'm actually not quite sure how he managed to get his first book published, it was so awful. While his style has become a bit more polished by the time he gets around to the Landover series, nothing can make up for his basic lack of skill in storytelling. His characters are flat and all pretty much the same. Motivations are questionable at best and usually not addressed at all. He explains way too much instead of just letting the story tell itself. I guess he should be glad that some people found something in the Shannara stories that they like so he can ride that pony til it drops, because he doesn't offer anyone not enamoured of that series anything that would make it worth their while to wade through his interminable prose.
