Initially starting with a young girl mourning the fact that black is not a color in the rainbow, her attempts to list off things that are black steadily shift from the negative to the positive then back to something more solemn and then ending on something more hopeful. The simple, beautiful, rhythmic recitation of the girl's reflection on the color black carries her through history all the way to the present day and the much-needed affirmation that black is a color in her rainbow.

Wow - this complex book is both thoughtful and beautiful. There is so many nods to Black culture in a really provoking and unique way. I loved the artists, poets, activists weaved into every bit of a space. The illustrations pop off the page. I also appreciated the thoughtful backmatter.
