One juror changed the verdict. What if she was wrong? From the Academy Award–winning screenwriter of The Imitation Game and bestselling author of The Last Days of Night. . . . "Graham Moore does the impossible, creating a page-turning legal thriller with a twisty and absolutely riveting plot, as well as raising profound and thought-provoking questions about the jury system and modern justice."—Lisa Scottoline It's the most sensational case of the decade. Fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar real estate fortune, vanishes on her way home from school, and her teacher, Bobby Nock, a twenty-five-year-old African American man, is the prime suspect. The subsequent trial taps straight into America's most pressing preoccupations: race, class, sex, law enforcement, and the lurid sins of the rich and famous. It's an open-and-shut case for the prosecution, and a quick conviction seems all but guaranteed—until Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury, convinced of Nock's innocence, persuades the rest of the jurors to return the verdict of not guilty, a controversial decision that will change all their lives forever. Flash forward ten years. A true-crime docuseries reassembles the jury, with particular focus on Maya, now a defense attorney herself. When one of the jurors is found dead in Maya's hotel room, all evidence points to her as the killer. Now, she must prove her own innocence—by getting to the bottom of a case that is far from closed. As the present-day murder investigation weaves together with the story of what really happened during their deliberation, told by each of the jurors in turn, the secrets they have all been keeping threaten to come out—with drastic consequences for all involved.

THE HOLDOUT is not only an excellent courtroom drama , it gives the reader an opportunity to take a deeper dive into how racism, economic privilege and our adversarial legal system seek justice, without necessarily learning the "truth". It is character driven and takes place over a 10 year period. The story centers around a jury on a high profile case that is vilified by the press and the public for rendering a "not guilty" verdict that lets a teacher off the hook for the murder of a 15 year old student, he had inappropriate relationship with. The lone holdout for innocence brings the other 11 jurors around to her point of view, leaving untold resentment nd a unanimous verdict. The jurors are reunited for the 10 year anniversary and for a television reality show to examine their respective roles in freeing a man most people are sure is guilty. When one of them is murdered they will have to work together to keep the wrong people from being convicted, to see that justice is ultimately served, and protect their many secrets

I highly recommend THE HOLDOUT to mystery, thriller and crime fans, particularly those who like courtroom dramas. Plot, pacing, writing, and character development, are all well done and make for a very interesting and satisfying story.

A somewhat wierd story of a jury in a murder trial, how they reach a verdict and how it affects their lives. Ending predictable, cardboard characters. Heaven help us if the legal system is like this.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. The twists and turns were excellent and I couldn't wait to read what happened next. There is also some relevant race issues that are addressed i the book which are really timely.

“The Holdout” was a thrilling legal mystery. 25-year-old black teacher Bobby Nock, is on trial for killing white 15 year old pupil Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion dollar fortune. Her body hasn’t been discovered, but that isn’t going to stop this trial going forward.
There are 12 members of the jury in this high profile murder trial, and it’s expected that Bobby Nock’s conviction is a foregone conclusion - that is until jury member Maya Seale manages to persuade the other jury members to vote not guilty.
10 years later Maya is now a successful lawyer. Unfortunately, she is also the prime suspect in the murder of one of the jurors after a reunion at the hotel in which they were sequestered during the trial.
I think it’s a case of the less you know, the more interesting you’ll find this one. As legal thrillers go it’s pretty great. It was a riveting read with twists and turns, with a cracking ending. If you enjoy legal dramas, then look no further.

well constructed, like one of those packaging cartons that somehow unfolds into a sheet of cardboard with various cuts and folds. I can no longer use the expression 'shades of gray' so let's just say the degrees of guilt and culpability are not black and white.

A twisty legal thriller told from the point of the view of the jury. There are enough unexpected turns to please even the most hardened reader of the twisty mystery genre.

The Holdout started out interesting. I liked the premise, the plotting was steady, and was a quick read. The ending was a little meh, but this was an easy read; it felt like a Lifetime movie but a better.
