"Perfect for the anti-aviary (or bird fanatic with a sense of humor), this snarky illustrated handbook is equal parts profane, funny, and--let's face it--true. Featuring 50 common North American birds, such as the White-Breasted Butt Nugget and the Goddamned Canada Goose (or White-Breasted Nuthatch and Canada Goose for the layperson), Kracht identifies all the idiots in your backyard and details exactly why they suck with humorous, yet angry, ink drawings. Each entry is accompanied by facts about a bird's (annoying) call, its (dumb) migratory pattern, its (downright tacky) markings, and more. With migratory maps and tips for birding, plus musings on the avian population and the ethics of birdwatching, this is the essential guide to all things wings. No need to wonder what all that racket is anymore!"--Amazon.com.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Take your typical bird identification guide and sass it up a notch or two and you’ve got this hilarious nature book full of scratchy, child-like illustrations and trash-talk filled descriptions including appearance and “Did you know?” facts. Bird names are changed to protect the innocent and dumb.

I laughed more than I really should have over this foul-mouthed (fowl-mouthed?) humor that basically insults the entire avian world. There is some actual data in with the jokes, so this would be a good gag gift for your friend who is an avid birder, or for your other friend who is an avid anti-birder who would rather be eaten alive by ferruginous snotpipers than spend another minute hiding in a bush waiting to see a northern yellow-spotted dumbsnipe.

This humorous take on "The Field Guide to North American Birds" would make a good gift for birders with a sense of humor, or for the partner of an avid birder who doesn't quite get what the fuss is about. The most common North American birds are renamed (occasionally PG-13) and the dry field notes you'd expect from a field guide are replaced with sarcastic comments about how unimpressive these noisy tree-dwellers are. The entries are adapted from the author's blog, making this a quick read or a good gag gift.
