This is a solid documentary on the modern world of romance publishing. Whatever your stereotypes of the romance genre are, check them at the door, because there are no cringe-inducing caricatures of writers or readers here. (*cough*terriblePBSdocunonsenseGuiltyPleasures*cough*)

The film makes sure to include the grand dames of Black romance, Beverly Jenkins and Brenda Jackson, discussing the lack of romances by and about Black people (and people of color in general - #ritassowhite, anyone?). Self-publishing is also covered, as is LGBTQ+ romance - although this section focuses more on lesbian romance author Radclyffe and her publishing house Bold Strokes Books. It doesn't mention at all the popularity of male/male romance (the majority of whose readers are heterosexual women). Included are interviews with romance influencers such as Sarah Wendell, who heads the extremely popular romance review website "Smart B*tches, Trashy Books".

If you don't know much about the romance genre, are a longtime romance reader, or somewhere in between, this documentary provides a solid overview of what the romance industry looks like in the 21st century.

A very interesting documentary about a subject that much isn't known about. I'd always known that romances were popular, but never to this extent. This was a real eye-opener, and a movie that all aspiring writers should definitely watch.

An engaging look at the romance novel industry, which is fast-paced and totally rewarding. The documentary is multi-faceted and inquisitive, similar to the industry it reveals. It was a true pleasure to experience it!
