"In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery -- Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents -- two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along"-- Provided by publisher.

Hey, Kiddo is such an inspiring book. I just couldn't put it down. I can relate so much to Jarrett as a child, since I am an aspiring artist as well, but it must've been hard learning to accept a family with many troubles. Overall, a very well written graphic novel/memoir.

As someone with school age children, this book serves as a good reminder that I should not make assumptions about the lives of the kids I come into contact with. This is a complicated story with complex people, especially Jarrett's grandparents. Sometimes you really like them, and sometimes you really want to judge them and say, "that's why there's so much strife in the family"! In the end, it doesn't matter what the reader thinks, because they mean everything to Jarrett as flawed as they are, and I think that's a good lesson for the reader. I'll be thinking about this book for awhile.

I suggested 12+ for suitability for this book. My 13 year old isn't interested in reading it at all (too dark!), but even a younger child who can commiserate with Jarrett's situation would likely find it very helpful.

This was a wonderful and heartbreaking story. Readers will be able to see Jarrett Krosoczka's childhood through the amazing illustrations.

A powerful graphic autobiography about the author's absent father, addicted mother and overcoming this to become a professional artist and writer with the help of his hard-edged but loving grandparents. Highly recommended.

Incredible story of the author's childhood growing up without a father and his mother's frequent absences due to drug addiction. While dark, I also found this to be an uplifting story as Krosoczka was raised by his grandparents and surrounded by close family, who recognized and supported his artistic gifts.
