From Library Staff

KOD is a bleak and introspective album, with spare beats that focus on Cole's lyricism. This album tackles tough topics with a harsh worldview, but cements Cole as a witty and uncompromising creative. Suggested by Kristi.

J. Cole’s fifth music album, KOD, is an abbreviation for three different terms: Kids on Drugs, King Overdosed, and Kill Our Demons. The album released in 2018 and received instant praise for the topics addressed in the songs. With the use of an alter-ego contradicting his statements throughout the songs in the album, he spoke about issues such as youngsters simply chasing money and losing themselves in the process. Moreover, he addressed problems like forms of addiction and ways of escaping them, as well as of breaking free of past trauma. In short, the lyrics are an extremely important factor of all songs, and J. Cole clearly prefers their use over the use of heavy autotune or mumble rap. I would give this album 4 stars and I would recommend it to people more interested in learning about J. Cole’s music. @Riveting_Reviews of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board
