"Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir is a coming-of-age story about a young Asian trans girl, pathological liar, and kung-fu expert who runs away from her parents' abusive home in a rainy city called Gloom. Striking off on her own, she finds her true family in a group of larger-than-life trans femmes who make their home in a mysterious pleasure district known only as the Street of Miracles. Under the wings of this fierce and fabulous flock, she blossoms into the woman she has always dreamed of being, with a little help from the unscrupulous Doctor Crocodile. When one of their number is brutally murdered, our protagonist joins her sisters in forming a vigilante gang to fight back against the transphobes, violent johns, and cops that stalk the Street of Miracles. But when things go terribly wrong, she must find the truth within herself in order to stop the violence and discover what it really means to grow up and find your family."-- Provided by publisher.

From Library Staff

Kai Cheng Thom blurs the line between fairy-tale and memoir in this story about an East Asian trans girl who runs away from home and joins a girl gang. Fiercely funny while not shying away from darker topics, Thom weaves a magical tale about battling transmisogyny and racism while finding your tr... Read More »

Part memoir, part fairytale, part coming of age story, this #OwnVoices novel about a trans girl coming into her own is captivating and complex.

"Every girl needs to be at least a little bit dangerous."

A stunning, incendiary book. This surrealist quasi-fictional memoir is full of strength and pain and beauty and everything in between. It’s somehow dreamlike and staggeringly real all at once, and unlike anything else I’ve read.

Warning for self-harm, transmisogyny, and violence. This book is not for everyone, but it is so intensely worth reading. I know I'm going to be putting this book in the hands of lots of people. I’d particularly recommend this book to anyone interested in queerness, girl gangs, magical realism, and poetry.

This book is phenomenal and I can't sing its praises high enough! Kai Cheng Thom does such an excellent job of using metaphor and surreal / fantasy moments to both get at the emotional roots of trauma and talk about the real experiences of trans women of color with out shying away or overwhelming the reader.

A definite read if your trans or queer, or if you're interested in trans/queer literature, but if your keywords are: magical realism, imaginative, fantasy, speculative fiction, healing from trauma, or social justice, its an amazing sweet, tender read.

Content warning for self-harm, abuse, assault, violence against trans people, violence against sex workers.

I cried a lot reading this book, which if you met me, you'd know is a good recommendation :)

A really great, whimsical, heartfelt, and bittersweet story that seems to blend the fictional with the autobiographical. Heavy with magical realism and trans women beating the shit out of transmisogynistic creeps and cops. A+ will read again.
