This is a great book about 3 generations of women in 1 family struggling to balance the promise of the American dream & unshakable grip of history.

Impressive and engaging first novel from Elaine Castillo. It's part of a new wave of books dealing with the immigrant experience and these books can't help but feel political in the age of Trump. Castillo deals with Filipino-Americans and finds new ways to write about familiar themes and situations. For the squeamish, be advised that there are some graphic sex scenes. Also check out "The Refugees" and "Insurrecto."
