Graphic Novel - Advanced to Round 3

This graphic novel featuring a prince who has no interest in a bride, and his dressmaker friend who wants to push all boundaries, provides a charming story of being true to one's self.

In this whimsical Cinderella story with a twist, a young prince must find a bride to fulfill his royal obligations. Two people know his secret. Suggested by Marie B.

This graphic novel is like a delicious pastry: pretty, fulfilling, and not too heavy. It manages to address an important issue without weighing down the reader with too much text. It was a joy to read! Suggested by Lindsey

Love wins. That's the message of this graphic novel set in a time when dressing as a woman could scandalously ruin a man's place in society. But for one dressmaker, it is a chance to bring her fashion forward designs to life - as long as she keeps his secret. A price that becomes too high to pay when fear of being found out causes the prince to make a terrible choice that hurts his most loyal companion. But as in the best of fairy tales, all is not lost, ultimately the prince and the dressmaker find ways to be true to themselves and to each other in this wonderfully illustrated tale of courage, acceptance, and love.

A Great Books for Great Kids pick. In this historical graphic novel fantasy set in France, there is a secret among the fashion world. A great read for fantasy fans in grades 7-8.

A highly engaging story of two interesting characters.

Pick this one up for the illustrations alone! Wowza! This is a cute graphic novel about a prince who has a secret and a dressmaker who has a goal. They come together in an unusual way, and must rely on each other's support to become their true selves and realize their happy ending. It's a bit light for the subject matter at hand, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing (I mean, we have plenty of heavy versions of this story out there, right?).

Am I the only one who thinks the Prince acts like a jerk to the two women who like him?

Prince Sebastian has got an incredibly difficult path to climb. That said, in the midst of an argument, Sebastian makes a serious threat to his best friend Frances. He almost immediately retracts his words. But that scene still chills me a bit. I don't think the story truly delves into the consequences of Sebastian's actions toward Frances.

I also wished that the story gave a happier ending to Princess Juliana. Juliana, in her own subtle way, tries to move beyond traditional gender roles. She tells Sebastian that she likes him because he seems kind and sensitive -- because he doesn't fit into the mold of a traditional dude. Juliana then takes the initiative to ask Sebastian out. But Juliana doesn't get any points for that glimpse of emotional maturity. Instead, the story abandons her, confused and frustrated, at the end.

This was a sweet story about being true to yourself. I loved the innocent love story. The Prince's struggle to stay true to who he is without compromising his responsibilities is a struggle many can relate to. This is a really cute book!

I loved the beautiful art, the fashion and the characters. The main characters are confidants, understandable and not judgmental about the other. Refreshing story, where nothing is defined or labeled and I enjoyed the ending.

Some days I look at myself in the mirror and think "That's me, Prince Sebastian! I wear boy clothes and look like my father." Other days it doesn't feel right at all. Those days I feel like I'm actually...a princess.
