The latest translation of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series has Geralt of Rivia forced into a series of Witcher contracts after his swords are stolen. Geralt manages to get mixed up in a competition for succession among the son's of a hated monarch, the intrigues of Sorcerors of Rissberg and their hunt for a demon that may have been released by one of their own, and a merchant leading a doomed ship with dangerous cargo. If you've read the Witcher graphic novel "The Fox Children", one part of this story will already be familiar to you. That story plays out in this novel, with a few important changes.

The story itself also has a few "time jump" interludes that skip ahead more than a century. These scenes don't tie in to the main story until the end, but they provide a great glance into the future world of the series. Fans of the game series can place the main story as happening sometime before Witcher II, as Geralt has not yet lost his memory, but it ends on his way to begin his employ with King Foltest of Temeria. The book is also unique in the series in that Ciri is only mentioned a few times and has no dedicated chapters. While the book is part of the overall Witcher story, you don't need to read any previous books or even have played the game to enjoy it.
