Great film with stories of diverse characters interacting. For a change, Chris Cooper gets to play a good-guy hero. Kris Kristofferson is frightening as the corrupt cop violently terrorizing black and brown people. A lot of talented performers in the many minor roles - wish you could see them in other films but their IMDB resumes are thin. Frances McDormand is a little over the top as the mentally unbalanced ex-wife. If you blink, you'll miss the few brief scenes with Matthew McConaughey.

Thought it a pretty good flick. An interesting story line that one needs to follow to a surprising ending.

This film of southwestern USA uses a crime story to tell a late 20th century story of the relationships between Whites, Native Americans, African-Americans and Mexican-Americans. Screenwriter and director John Sayles was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for best screenwriter. This will not be a favorite film for today’s Donald Trump fans, but the problems of thirty and forty years ago are still with us today.

This masterwork is one of John Sayles' best--a complex web about an unsolved murder in a Texas border town; endemic corruption; relationships between the town's population of whites, Mexicans and blacks; three dissimilar sheriffs and frowned upon romances. It all is spun out like a compelling novel, with great intelligence and strong cinematic skills. This is a great movie!
