Re-animator combines earnest acting, creepy Lovecraftian atmosphere, and fun practical effects to produce a near-perfect Halloween movie,

The mark of a good gory movie is when movie producers are content not to make it a franchise. Alas, I studied electrical engineering at university; if only I had gone to med school I wouldn't have felt so far out of my depth watching this piece of highbrow entertainment. For instance, it was completely beyond me how the professor's head was able to speak when his trachea was no longer connected to his lungs, doesn't air have to pass through the vocal cords to make a person's voice audible? I particularly liked the droll humor of the security guard in the basement hallway, "Don't know why they keep locked doors around here; nobody wants in, and ain't nobody gettin' out!" But why would a teaching hospital require an armed guard outside it's mortuary door, are they worried that cadavers would get stolen? Why don't they just issue keys to the key faculty members? Anyhow, I'm glad that guard was among the few characters to escape alive after that gory chain of events unfolded. My main criticisms? I think that a movie with such a strong, inspired plot didn't need nearly so much gratuitous nudity to hold the audience's attention. This sexism could have been redeemed if the dean Halsey's daughter, Megan, had turned the tables on Herbert West and avenged the death of her beloved cat. I was also very annoyed at composer(?) Richard Band's all-strings score - a blatant plagiarism of Bernard Herman's "Psycho" score! Band could have passed it off as a tongue-in-cheek homage to Herman had he written some original music and confined himself to that "shriek . . shriek . . shriek" shower scene dissonance while the reanimated cadavers jumped from their gurneys and mayhem ensued in the Miskatonic mortuary. All that aside, I give this movie an overall B+.

Classic !!!!!!!!

This movie has little to do with the short story outside of the basic premise, but it's still a fun, goofy, and gory horror classic.

Re-Animator is splatter heaven. Based on the sci-fi novel by H.P. Lovecraft, Re-Animator's gore is exceeded only by its wit.

H.P Lovecraft is my favorite author. That being said, I have obviously read the original short story this film was based off of. Most of the film is different than the story, but they got it right. Herbert West was exactly like he was in the story. Arrogant, Egotistical and extremely intelligent. Jeffery Combs steals the show

Highly recommended if you're a horror or Lovecraft fan.

Ahhhh speaking of classics! This is such a fun trip down memory lane. If you are watching it for the first time, don't expect to be scared, but do expect to be entertained. If you have seen it and are giving it another view. I highly encourage it!

I read the original H.P. Lovecraft short story first, just to see if it made me appreciate the film more... turns out, you really don't need to do that, this film is its own entity, and it's outrageous. Jeffrey Coombs is brilliant as the young mad doctor; somber and deadly serious most of the time, but retaining a wonderfully dry wit. The music and the effects are top-notch, and of course, there's plenty of fanservice. I'm sure Lovecraft himself would be more than satisfied with this adaptation...

I remember loving this movie as a kid. I have no clue why at this point. I love H.P. Lovecraft and I love the story this is based on. That being said, this "cult classic" does not hold up well to the test of time. There are some decent effects, but the acting is terrible and there just isn't anything scary about the movie. I suppose there is supposed to be some dark humor here, like Return of the Living Dead or the Evil Dead movies, but I missed it. I won't be watching this ten years from now to see if I still like it. Reanimator is dead to me ( with no chance the glowing green liquid will revive it. )
