A stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. A portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

Three stories of women, living in the same region - Only similarity between them is that they are not connecting with someone they associate with. I wished to know more about the possible, but probably missed connection in the third story. Was it just the desire to interconnect with another human or was it sexual attraction? I liked Reichardt's "Meek's Cutoff" more than this film as it is probably the most realistic (anti-Hollywood) western I have ever seen.

With such a great list of female actors, I thought I was in for a treat. I was wrong. Nothing happens in this movie. It was completely pointless and monotonous. Great movie if one has insomnia.

Written and directed by Kelly Reichardt in 2016 based on three short stories from Maile Meloy's collections:"Half in Love and Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It", this American drama sketches the lives of four women.
Although the cover says something meaningful, the film appears slow-paced, monotonous and doze-inducing.
It contains some tiring and redundant scenes of driving, horse-riding and collecting stones.
No fascinating scenes!
No thrilling scenes!
In a nutshell, it is one of the worst movies I've ever watched.
I felt like I wasted 107 minutes.

I found this film to be a complete waste of time and had no point nor did I find this to be "an indelible portrait of independent women," as quoted on the DVD jacket.
This was slow moving and after the first 45 minutes, I found myself skipping ahead, as there was many places that had no dialogue, just slow and seemingly unconnected or viable scenes.
There was no bonus material on this DVD to explain the story. Not recommended.

I suspect all these negative postings will not prevent the audience for this from watching and delighting in it. That audience will in large part be satisfied viewers of Kelly' earlier work. I leave these thoughts for dubious potential viewers. This film derives from short stories. of the kind you might find in the New Yorker. If you are like me, it is unlikely you will be motivated to read them unless you see this first. What is constructed here is a mash up of the three stories that apparently sat well with the author. Perhaps these works bring out a natural landscape and the natural people that inhabit it. Humans coping with the attainable and unattainable longings of their hearts. In other words, not paint drying.

In this Melba toast of a movie three short and largely irrelevant shorts are vaguely connected to concoct a film(?). Art house indie, whatever that means. Makes me wonder, if a film is not intended to inform, provoke thought or entertain does it need to be made.
Your two hours will never return. Much better to go for a walk. Even in poor weather.

Extremely bored for the first third. Then I read these reviews and realized I'd be bored for the next 2/3rds. So I quit!!!

The cinematic equivalent of watching someone do their taxes

If you are looking for a cure to insomnia, then this movie is for you. Watching paint dry is more exciting than this flick.

Can't people find any better criticism than "boring"? Like your life is so exciting clueless commentators! If you're familiar with any of the films directed by Kelly Reichardt, which include "Wendy & Lucy," "Meek's Cutoff," and "Old Joy," you know that her films are deliberately paced, understated, and, yes, slow. It's like calling Jim Jarmusch's films boring. It pretty much misses the point. Anyway, her latest film, based on stories by Maile Meloy (who brother is the head Decemberist), is a nuanced and intimate look at the lives of three women, whose stories are linked by the vast, sometimes bleak, sometimes beautiful Montana landscape. Laura Dern is a lawyer with a difficult client, Michelle Williams is an unhappy wife looking to build a new home, and, in the most affecting segment, newcomer Lily Gladstone is a lonely farmhand who quietly falls for a lawyer/teacher (Kristen Stewart). It's a film that, I think, rewards your patience and has strong performances, good use of landscape, and an emotional depth that sneaks up on you. I'd ignore the "boring" comments and decide for yourself.
