This is a stark and frightening history of America's nuclear weapons program, from Project Manhattan to the present day. Much of the book deals not with the weapons themselves or the Football (although they are discussed throughout) but with what is known as Continuity of Government (COG), what shape the US government would take - including multiple lines of succession for the various government departments as well as the Presidency itself, what would happen to Congress if it was left with a "rump" (say, only nine Representatives and a couple Senators) and where to evacuate the Supreme Court. It lists a series of secret bunkers built for the ultimate catastrophe, some of which have been decommissioned due to the end of the Cold War but others which are still operational. The author suggests strongly that America would likely be in a state of martial law while the country rebuilt itself (which could take up to ten years, if at all). Finally, we get a look into what happened on 9/11 and how COG was torn into total disarray - suggesting if an even greater attack ever happened, the States would be totally unprepared. This book is a warning not only that the worst case scenario could happen, but that civil liberties people take for granted could be taken away - perhaps indefinitely, perhaps permanently.

I look forward to reading this book - - looks mighty interesting and reminds me of an article written back in the 1980s by journalist, Nicholas von Hoffman, called // The Caves of Cowardice \\ about 90 some underground gov't installations in the event of some sort of future catastrophe - - presumably there were that many dotted around the country so as to be available on short notice in proximity to a select few! [I occasionally listen to coasttocoastam.com which covers a spectrum of guest, some I love, some I despise, and the author was on the other night and gave a tremendous interview, making this book even more interesting, and I would suggest in conjunction with this book, to read the outstanding and number one book on 9/11 by Lynn Spencer, an aviation expert, titled: Touching History. This book simply and exhaustively details the events of that day, but perfectly captures the ineptness and incompetency of our fearless leaders at that time {assuming they had zero foreknowledge of what was to come, and assuming it was a coincidence that the Bremer fellow who worked in one of the Twin Towers just happened to hold his conference in a different building that morning}.]
