If you're like me and rooted for young Flora on the Great British Baking Show, you may well enjoy her book. Most recipes are unpretentious, but if you are intent on making any of them, make sure your gram scale is in order - weights and measures are metric. The photos are lovely and evoke a timelessness and bucolic idyll, many show Flora and her Young Friends at play and Good Food artfully arranged.
While I've not put any of the works to the test, the Wardrobe Cake, a black velvet cake that includes a half pint of Guinness, looks devilishly appetizing; simply piles of cream cheese frosting over a tall, dark and handsome sponge. I am a culinary philistine, but I appreciate being introduced to new terms and regional cuisines (kanelbullar, bostock) and she gives a bit of that. Many recipes will offer substitutions that either take the flavor in a slightly new direction, or allow you to fudge if your larder is less than perfect.
Perfect if you're planning a meal for a celebration, or if you just like pretty pictures of food: win-win!
