Set in New York during 1939 just before World War II, Cousins Joe Kavalier and Sammy Clays collaborate to form one of America's hottest new trends: comic books. Joe is looking for a get-rich-quick scheme so that he can bring his family to safety from the war. While his cousin Sammy focuses on creating a new comic book character. This playful title is misleading, so if one doesn't know the book won a Pulitzer, it would be easy to think this is a high-jinks jaunt.

The action moves quickly, for sure. Yet Chabon does not only entertain. He tucks in the diaspora of Bohemian Jews, life in NYC in the 30s and 40s, how comic books evolved, and a lot of poignant and often humorous insights about the human condition.

The writing lends itself to oral storytelling, and the quality of Colacci's peformance is very, very good. (Meryl Streep is clearly not the only actor who can do a Polish-American accent.)

This title has led to an intriguing discovery for me. I've been devouring books on audio in recent years because I don't make time to sit still and read them. I started reading Kavalier & Clay in installments online during Chicago Public Library's "One Book, One Chicago" event. The writing was amazingly engaging! I tried to finish the book by listening to the audiobook but it was not nearly as enjoyable. I guess that means I should make more time to read words on a page. Ha. I will.
