I really enjoyed this movie 25 years ago when I first saw it. Just watched it again and it holds up quite well. It's neat watching the band improving their musical chops as their personalities clash and the band chemistry goes in the tank.

The center of attention here is the lead singer Deco (Andrew Strong) who is a truly gifted soul singer with the prickly personality of Ty Cobb. When I first saw this movie, I thought Strong would find fame as a white soul singer, but it turns out he was the same obnoxious jerk in real life as the role he played in The Commitments. Too bad, the movie featured excellent music and quirky humor.

Yes, like American Idol, only more group-oriented. I'm sure the actors/real people in this movie dreamt of being stars too, but the narcissism isn't half as lunging.
Clever too: make a movie about underdogs trying to start a band, with real underdogs trying to make a successful movie.
Whatever: the point is that this is a boatload of fun!

Great story, believable characters well acted, infused with good music. And laugh out loud funny to boot - there is something about the comic timing that is especially good in this film. I don't think you can ask for much in a movie, and I enjoyed it immensely. You won't get lush Irish landscapes, as the movie is shot in a gritty, urban setting (Dublin) that remains true to the original story, but that's partly what makes the movie so appealing. The extra features are worth a look, too, as there you will learn about how the actors were chosen from the local populace, many of whom had never acted before. All in all, a very well done film!

Before American Idol, there was "The Commitments". This film is "feckin'" funny!
