A somewhat run of the mill, formulaic heist movie with a light, comic tone. Robert Redford, who doesn't usually play criminals, gets out of jail and is enlisted by his brother-in-law (George Segal) to steal a diamond from the museum. Unlike many heist films, the assembling the team/planning is minimal and the heist itself doesn't take up much screen time. They have to spring one of their associates from jail, break into police headquarters, and use a hypnotist to get the diamond. The direction by Peter Yates, who did "Bullitt," is slack and the screenplay by William Goldman never finds the right balance between humor and action. It is worth it for the cast: Redford, Segal, Moses Gunn, and Zero Mostel. Score by Quincy Jones. Based on the novel by Donald Westlake. Sleater-Kinney took this title for their fourth album.
