A shakeup at MI5 and a terrorist attack on British soil set in motion clandestine machinery known to few modern spies. David Cartwright isn't a modern spy, however; he's legend and a bonafide Cold War hero. He's also in his dotage and losing his mind to Alzheimer's. His stories of "stotes" hiding in the bushes, following his every move have been dismissed by friends and family for years. Cartwright may be losing track of reality but he's certain about one thing: Old spooks don't go quietly and neither do the secrets they keep. What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for those who know too many secrets but don't remember they're secret? Or does someone take care of the senile spy for good? These are the questions River Cartwright must ask when his grandfather, a Cold War?era operative, starts to forget to wear pants and begins to suspect everyone in his life has been sent by the Home Office to watch him. But River has other things to worry about. A bomb has detonated in the middle of a busy shopping center and killed forty innocent civilians. The agents of Slough House have to figure out who is behind this act of terror before the situation escalates.

This fourth installment in the Slough House series does not disappoint. You can read them out of order, but the backstories of secondary characters build over time and reading them in order gives greater depth to the series as whole. Preceded by Real Tigers, followed by London Rules. Herron's books are gaining popularity; if you find yourself on the hold list, shorten the wait with his other series featuring two Oxford lady detectives whose lives overlap and entwine.

Fourth in this amazing series. The failed spies who inhabit Slough House are the "Slow Horses" of British counter-intelligence. Pitted against their own bureaucracy (which compares unfavorably with the KGB) as well as a terrifyingly well-trained terrorist organization -- young and impulsive River Cartwright follows a trail left by his grandfather's failing memories... and the ghosts of "spook" street come back to haunt Lamb and the rest of the Slow Horses.

Witty, sarcastic, pithy, all the repartee you could want, wry observations galore- the usual background that is so well done in the Slow Horse series. It says something that after 4 quick reads in the series I was able to predict a couple of the plot twists, but how to get there and the contortions required make it still an exquisite read. I am now of the conviction that Herron's work is the best of the spy novels out there. They deserve to be read in sequence, though.
