Imagine a place where war and victory is existent. If you’ve ever pictured these horrific scenes, you’re just seconds away from reading Projekt 1065 by Alan Gratz. As one of the bestselling authors of all time, his books are sure to give you the opportunity to explore the outside universe.
This novel is about on a thirteen year old boy, Michael O’Shaunessey, the son of an Irish ambassador to Nazi Germany, who lives in Berlin with his parents. Just like all the other boys at his school, Michael is a member of the Hitler Youth. He joins in all their atrocious games and book burnings. However, Michael has a secret; him and his parents are spies. The father of one of Michael’s Hitler Youth friend works on an assignment, and Michael manages to find and memorize a series of plans and blueprints to build a mysterious device.
In my opinion, Michael and his parents seem depressed, although Fritz is happy on the inside. Michael hides from the dropping bombs and rushes into a barn house, and finds an allied airman, Simon and manages to rescue him to get him back home to Ireland. From my personal viewpoint, the author manages to use unique elements to briefly describe the characters in this book. He uses German phrases and words to describe how the characters feel and why they feel that way.
The target audience/age group recommendation I consider is suitable for this novel is ages 14 to 18 years of age because of the language use and series of events going on. For example, this novel is taking place at the time of World War 2 and Hitler. Overall, Projekt 1065 was an interesting and mature read to comprehend. I hope that future generations will find this book quite thought-provoking to peruse through.

A 2018-2019 preliminary Missouri Truman Readers Award nominee (grades 6-8)

As the son of the Irish ambassador to Germany during WWII, Michael is required to participate in the Hitler Youth, but like his parents Michael is a spy. When an allied pilot goes down, Michael's family finds themselves in greater danger than before.

This is my third Alan Gratz, and he is quickly becoming a favorite. Projekt 1065 makes a good companion novel to Gratz's Prisoner B-3087, dealing with the Hitler Youth and Germans in Berlin during WWII. It's an exciting historical fiction novel with lots of action and violence but also a strong hero with a good heart.

Likes/Dislikes: When I first started the book I thought it was going to be great, telling me what's it like to be a young child spy in the war. I was pretty attached to it, wondering what's going to happen next, who's going to die, how was he going to survive? I don't really have a dislike for the book, just didn't give a 5 because it wasn't one of my favourite books I've read.

Filled with suspense and emotion, Projekt 1065 was an interesting and moving story that was highly enjoyable. This book is set in Germany during world war ll and revolves around the life of a young boy named Michael. At 15, he trains to become one of the Nazis but in actuality, he and his parents have taken part in a secret organization that are against Hitler and hisNazis. With his role as a spy for the alliances, he must gain information without being suspected or be punished to death. The details and suspense in the book are amazing. Whenever you think something will happen, you will always be left puzzled at the actual outcome. The plot of this story is slightly cliché and has been similarly used before, but the actual content is still very enjoyable. This book is set during World War II, so it also educates readers of a major historical event that took place in our world. This book is highly recommended for a more advanced reader that enjoys learning about world history.

While not wholly believable that a young Irish boy would live as a spy in Germany, this story gives a really great insight into the Hitler Youth, and how the young generation could get so enthralled in the Nazi party.

Wow, what a book. Young Micheal is Irish secretly opposing Hitler. It outlines the struggle to not give away the disgust you'd feel living at that time. The challenge to not become swept up in the fervor. To allow bad things to happen for the greater good. A relatively quick read as it moves thru the secrets Micheal hides. An interesting historical read of the Hitler Youth.
