Fallen Skies takes readers to post-World War I England in a suspenseful story about the marriage of a wealthy war hero and an aspiring singer he barely knows. Can a family's mannered traditions and cool emotions erase the horrors of war from a young couple's past? Now back in print from New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory, Fallen Skies takes readers to post-World War I England in a suspenseful story about the marriage of a wealthy war hero and an aspiring singer he barely knows. Lily Valance is determined to forget the horrors of the war by throwing herself into the decadent pleasures of the 1920s and pursuing her career as a music hall singer. When she meets Captain Stephen Winters, a decorated veteran, she's immediately drawn to his wealth and status. And Stephen, burdened by his guilt over surviving the Flanders battlefields where so many soldiers perished, sees the possibility of forgetting his anguish in Lily, but his family does not approve. Lily marries Stephen, only to discover that his family's fa?ade of respectability conceals a terrifying combination of repression, jealousy and violence. When Stephen's terrors merge dangerously close with reality, the truth of what took place in the mud and darkness brings him and all who love him to a terrible reckoning.

This book gives really good portrayal of life in Britain with the changes in class structure as a result of WWI. The 1920's were frenetic as people adjusted to the huge losses of life suffered in the war and the 'flu epidemic.Post traumatic stress disorder was a fact in all walks of life and hidden as shameful.. Philippa Gregory is better known for her later novels about the Plantagenets and the Tudors but this one is equally worthwhile . It would make a beautiful if tragic film or TV series which would be pertinent with all the current anniversaries of the events.

Very long book but easy to read. Lily and Stephen marry but have many secrets. Lily tries to fit in to the life of a post-WWI upper class family, coached by Stephen's mother whose adherence to politeness and stiff upper lip and 'what is done' is unbending. Very tragic story showing us the effects of PTSD from the war to end all wars.

A well written book, but very LONG (ov/500 pages) - shows what can happen with PTDS no matter what war.

Sad, but very introspective tale of the effects of war. Wonderfully written.
