When Jane strikes out for London, her ancient carriage and the mail coach both break down, stranding the young noblewoman and her companions in the midst of an impenetrable fog. Ever resourceful, they seek shelter at Wintringham Abbey, the home of a frosty earl with little admiration for his fellow man. Grudgingly, the earl allows them to stay.

Jane’s arrival with her companion, Miss Gracechurch, is most appreciated when one of the earl’s guests goes into labor. The emergency seems to thaw the earl’s starchy demeanor and Jane is treated to a rare glimpse of the intriguing man within. Once Wintringham Abbey is behind them, however, Jane is certain that she will never see the handsome earl again.

However, as luck would have it, the earl is forced to travel to London to locate a bride. Unfortunately, this is also Jane’s coming out season and the two events throw Jane and Lord Wintringham together repeatedly. What ensues is a delightful game of cat and mouse from parks and ballrooms to carriages and steamboat rides - with love as the victor!
