?Everything I know about life, I learned from the daily practice of sitting down to write." From the best-selling author of Devotion and Slow Motion comes a witty, heartfelt, and practical look at the exhilarating and challenging process of storytelling. At once a memoir, meditation on the artistic process, and advice on craft, Still Writing is an intimate and eloquent companion to living a creative life. Through a blend of deeply personal stories about what formed her as a writer, tales from other authors, and a searching look at her own creative process, Shapiro offers her gift to writers everywhere: an elegant guide of hard-won wisdom and advice for staying the course. ?The writer's life requires courage, patience, empathy, openness. It requires the ability to be alone with oneself. Gentle with oneself. To be disciplined, and at the same time, take risks." Writers?and anyone with an artistic temperament?will find inspiration and comfort in these pages. Offering lessons learned over twenty years of teaching and writing, Shapiro brings her own revealing insights to weave an indispensable almanac for modern writers. Like Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird , Virginia Woolf's A Writer's Diary , and Stephen King's On Writing , Dani Shapiro's Still Writing is a lodestar for aspiring scribes and an eloquent memoir of the writing life.

About thirty pages of advice, and two hundred of chatty filler. The filler includes a lot of repetition, usually placed 30 to 50 pages apart, bragging about having lived in a New York brownstone (repeated about a dozen times), having friends who worked in New York brownstones, now living in a rural area (repeated about a dozen times also), the illness of her child (also repeated about a dozen and a half times), and the accident of her parents (repeated so often that it comprises about 150 pages of a 230 page book). On the plus side the chatter is rather snappy and impels one to keep reading to the end (to one's regret).

I can't recall where I came across Dani Shapiro's book, Still Writing but I ended up borrowing it from the library because I have a desire to write a book one day soon. However, my disdain for routines almost had me convinced that I didn't have what it takes to be a serious writer, so I read this book because I wanted to see how published writers like Shapiro stayed focused and committed to a life of professional writing.

Shapiro discusses a little bit of everything in her book, including her upbringing and how that influences her writing. What I appreciate the most is that she doesn't pretend to always feel like writing every single day and even admits how hard it can be to get something on the page. She shares some of her own writing habits & routines to stay focused as well as things she has learned to avoid, so that she doesn't waste a day of writing. The book is really helpful, especially for people like me that have a lot of ideas, yet struggle with taking the time that's necessary to bring them to life. It's a good source of encouragement for writers -- new and seasoned alike -- that need to be reminded that you're not the first writer to feel like an outsider, undisciplined, envious, talentless, or flat out lost in the story sauce; but that we're all in this together.

Still Writing is definitely a book that I'll reference again as I try to navigate my own writing endeavors.

Stunningly beautiful book. I absolutely loved it. I learned so much about myself and just how much I want to pursue a writing career.

No matter what type of book she writes, she is becoming a favorite of mine.

We may have written one book, or many, but all we know -- if we know anything at all -- is how to write the book we're writing.
