Oh Dear Silvia by Dawn French, the celebrated English actress, bestselling author, and comedian, is the clever, touching, and compelling story of one mysterious woman trapped in a coma after a fall from a balcony. Now, lying unconscious in a hospital bed, Silvia is plagued by a stream of often funny and sometimes poignant visits from friends and family, each of whom knows a different piece of the puzzle that is Silvia Shute. And, as she lies there listening to all of her visitors, the dark and terrible secret she's been hiding for years emerges. Dawn French's Oh Dear Silvia is an emotionally resonant and riveting tale of secrets, forgiveness, remorse, guilt, and love.

This is exactly the novel I would expect from one of Britcom's royalty. A book about a serious subject matter with just enough comic relief to find yourself laughing out loud. However, I don't know what compels a writer to feel the need to phonetically lay out on the page, word for word, syllable by syllable, a foreign or regional accent. In this case, a Jamaican nurse and an Indonesian housekeeper. We get the gist. Makes the reading a little tedious. Having said that, I would still recommend this book.

I learned so much about Silvia and she never spoke. The important people in her life give such a good description of their feelings towards her. It really showed how we each can have our actions misunderstood. I definitely would recommend this book.

A beautifully written story about family, death, craziness. I was surprised at how good a writer Dawn French is, though I shouldn't have been, given the brilliance of her comedic talents.

This book made howl with laughter and weep deeply.

Highly highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. It bounced from narrator to narrator, each revealing a little bit more about Silvia and at times allowing the reader to connect the dots. There are some truly funny scenes as well, that only Dawn French could come up with. Overall, the book was much more serious that I thought it would be.
