An outstanding and thorough guide to Western mythology, legend, and lore. Split into three sections, this book covers "The Age of Fable", "The Age of Chivalry", and "The Legends of Charlemagne". Bulfinch does a masterful job of both retelling the tales as well as elucidating on them. A must read for any avid or amateur folklorist.

The most useful part of this book is probably its wide range of myths from creation to romance. For a more detailed account about the exploits of Greek and Roman deities, I would recommend reading Edward Tripp's mythology or Edith Hamilton's edition.

Not the best page turner, but it had lots of good info that I didn't know before.

Summary

Add a Summary

Bulfinch's mythology complies a fundamental understanding of the mythology long since abandoned in the pagan religions of ancient Greece and parts of ancient Rome. Knowing how the gods took over the titans and how mortals dared to question their divine superiors conveys an epic story line for themes still present in modern literature.
