I really enjoyed this movie. I haven’t read the book. I like Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth they work well together in this movie.

Strange but worth the watch

I gave this movie a 1-star rating only because the circa 1950 costumes were stylish and pretty, but otherwise I thought the movie was very stupid. I watched most of it on fast forward hoping that it would settle down and become a real movie, but it didn't. It was unclear whether it was supposed to be a spoof on a spaghetti western, or a drama. The acting was overdone and amateurish, and I question why Kate Winslet would stoop to take on such a role.

With a very uneven and fragmented plot even the presence of two veteran lady actors cannot save the film. Winslet in my view was also too old to play the role of a young woman. There is also over-acting here and there. I just cannot make out what the film wanted to convey.

A strange film.
At first, a seemingly wacky comedy with odd but colourful characters and an underlying odd but colourful dark secret.
Then about a half hour before the ending, everything goes..sort of...um.
A few dramatically strong moments but largely uneven pace and storytelling.

This was very entertaining and there is no way you could anticipate what was going to happen. The characters were super colorful as was the film in general.

Was not expecting that ending.
I have not read the book upon which this movie is based, so I can't speak to the film's faithfulness to its origin source. But I liked it.... sort of.

Actually, I liked The Dressmaker quite a lot; I just wasn't prepared for its wild shifts in tone or jaw-dropping shocks. Its strengths are a uniformly excellent cast--with standout performances from Kate Winslet as the titular character, Hugo Weaving as the intriguing and rather poignant local constable, Liam Hemsworth, hunky and tender as the farmer with whom Tilly finds love, and especially Miss Judy Davis as Mad Molly, Tilly's wily mum--and a dialogue that zings with droll humor and sharp, vinegary wit. (Also a shout out to young Darcy Wilson, who plays the child Tilly to heartbreaking perfection.)
But as I said, The Dressmaker's sudden turns and mood shifts means it probably won't be to everyone's taste. If you're looking for a film experience that is truly offbeat, give it a chance. You've never seen anything quite like it--and that's a good thing, actually.

Be advised that it shows rape and murder.

This interested me from the get-go and didn't let up until the ending, which is kind of a jaw-dropper but after all you were hoping she would do something like that! Interesting characters, fine acting (for the most part), good plot.

Sounds like she needs one.

Style and decency. Some designers just don't seem to know the difference, do they?

Burning off rubbish, were they? Looks like they overdid it.
