The new novel from Liane Moriarty, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Husband's Secret , Big Little Lies , and What Alice Forgot , about how sometimes we don't appreciate how extraordinary our ordinary lives are until it's too late. "What a wonderful writer?smart, wise, funny." ?Anne Lamott Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It's just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong? In Truly Madly Guilty , Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families. Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there's anything they can count on, it's each other. Clementine and Erika are each other's oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don't hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid's larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite. Two months later, it won't stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can't stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn't gone? In Truly Madly Guilty , Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don't say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

The audiobook reader is talented and makes the book come alive; her dramatic interpretations of characters' dialogue sounded natural and congruent with their personalities.
SPOILER ALERT: I really enjoyed Big Little Lies, so I had good expectations for this one. More than half the book relates the major impact of an unnamed backyard barbecue incident on several characters. As I heard the effect on yet another character, I thought, "Finally, we're going to find out," but no, the author withholds that till Disc 9 of 14 discs. I found this annoying, but I felt even more toyed with, when I found out the incident. It's something far more tragic than I'd imagined, and as a parent, not something I went to witness, even fictionally. I stopped the book at that point. Due to another reviewer here, I learned that the outcome was quite unexpectedly less tragic than the extended scene of parents' very intense, vocal, immediate grieving had led me to believe. So I considered resuming the book but decided no, I still don't want to live vicariously that experience, even with a surprising happy resolution. And I was annoyed with the author. It attests to the author's and narrator's skill that the scene was so disturbing, but I felt I hadn't enough foreshadowing of the quality of the mystery incident, especially after I'd spent so much time waiting for it to be revealed.

I have enjoyed the author's work in the past so my expectations may have been too high. I listened to the unabridged audiobook, which was 14 discs. In my opinion, the book could have been significantly shortened without losing anything. The narrator was overly dramatic and screeched throughout a good portion of the novel.

SPOILER ALERT: At a barbecue, Sam and Clementine are not watching their children and one almost drowns. Their is a prolonged build up to this event. The girl makes a full recovery but the book continues to drag on and on. It was a chore to finish it but I hate quitting in the middle, regardless of how bad the book is.

Just an ordinary day at an ordinary barbecue, what could possibly go wrong? That is exactly what couples Oliver and Erika, Sam and Clementine contemplate as they accept a last minute barbecue invitation from Erika and Oliver’s exuberant neighbours Vid and Tiffany.  Fast forward two months later and Sam, Clementine, Erika and Oliver keep asking themselves “What if we hadn’t gone?”

Clementine and Erika are childhood best friends with a complicated relationship whose lives and personalities couldn’t be more different. Clementine is a cellist is married to Sam, with two adorable young daughters, a chaotic life and an “anything goes” attitude toward parenting. Erika alternatively is married to Oliver, who both are accountants with type-A personalities, fraught childhoods, and are childless. Neighbours to Erika and Oliver, Vid is someone who enjoys all that life has to offer and with his "smoking hot" wife Tiffany, loves to host gatherings in their home in Sydney. None of them, especially Vid expected their lives to change the night of the barbecue and expose secrets that had been carefully tucked away.

In her new novel Truly Madly Guilty, Moriarty examines the foundation and strengths of relationships, marriages and parenthood. She writes a fast paced novel that will keep you wondering what happened the night of the barbecue to affect the lives of all who attended. This is a great read for the beach as well as for readers who enjoy solving mysteries through various point of views and timelines.
