There are some authors for whom I have lost all ability to read objectively (Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, Ann Patchett, Michael Chabon, Neil Gaiman). And so it is with Zadie Smith. It doesn't matter what her subject might be, who her characters are or what they do, I don't want it to stop. Nor can I put my finger precisely on the element these writers possess that so thoroughly pulls me in, and yet I can't turn away.

I had issues with the characters in Swing Time, issues with aspects of the storyline, but at no point was I compelled to abandon the book. Rather, a book like this, which frustrates and engages me, leaves me searching with fellow readers who want to pick it apart. I will now read all the critical and individual reviews, author interviews and internet chatter to see if I can glean any last drops out of this one, because, you see, I'm not ready for it to be over. But that's just my experience.
