Six hundred years old, the Imperial Merchant Ship Chathrand is a massive floating outpost of the Empire of Arqual. And it is on its most vital mission yet: to deliver a young woman whose marriage will seal the peace between Arqual and its mortal enemy, the Mzithrin Empire. But Thasha, the young noblewoman in question, may be bringing her swords to the altar. For the ship's true mission is not peace but war--a war that threatens to rekindle an ancient power long thought lost. As the Chathrand navigates treacherous waters, Thasha must seek unlikely allies--including a magic-cursed deckhand, a stowaway tribe of foot-high warriors, and a singularly heroic rat--and enter a treacherous web of intrigue to uncover the secret of the legendary Red Wolf.

Under the guise of a peace mission, the last of a line of giant sailing ships embarks with a stew of conspiracies and competing agendas aboard. Redick's masterful tetralogy mixes intrigue and adventure with good world-building and three-dimensional characters. I particularly liked how elements of cutesy fantasy like talking animals, brownies, and merfolk are used in a grown-up way. This series must be read in order.

I'm not sure if I was just in the wrong mood to read this book or if it really was as bad as I think it was. So I will probably try a re-read of this in the future and then amend my rating and review.

This is classic fantasy. A richly detailed world complete with culture, war and political complexeties. The story is good and offers intrigue, mystery and of course....conspiracy.

This book is fantastic and well written. Compelling and likeable characters. Giants and little people (Borrower sized), talking animals, magic and mayhem. And it all makes sense.

I am finding it difficult to wait to get to the next volume in the series.
