There are many recognizable saints in this book, but also more obscure figures. Each "chapter" is bite-sized and includes an illustrated picture, usually a holy card. It's a nifty book if you find yourself wondering just how many saints there are and who or what they serve.

This book is an addictive page-turner for serious Catholics and an episodic Church and general history for anyone. Spanning two thousand years of saints in all their individuality, eccentricity and God-given holiness, it includes many pages reproducing the equally unusual antique holy cards that were given out as a sign of devotion. Most of these ornate little works of folk art are at least a hundred years old and feature a portrait of the saint in question and/or a scene from his or her life. These range from the bizarre (St. Denis holding his own severed head) to the unexpected (the little girl-saint Rose of Viterbo preaching to a crowd) to the pious (any number of lovely little pictures of ecstatic saints carefully drawn and colored in miniature). Liberal critics of the Church might be surprised to find that there are saints for Native American rights, for victims of slavery, for people persecuted by Church officials, for scientists, and for ecology. Conservatives should note that there are saints for vegetarianism, animal protection and peacemaking. Of course there are saints calling for justice and for chastity, for aid to the poor and care for the sick, for babies' right to live and for the rights of single mothers. And the aegis of some traditional saints has been expanded to include television, bloggers, the Internet and on and on. All are conveniently listed for easy reading choices by category. In short: a fascinating read that I had trouble putting down on my first, long night with it.
