A scifi space drama that turns out to be less scifi than you would think. It's difficult to elaborate on the main problem of the show without spoiling the whole thing. The show initially presents itself as the story of a generational ship launched from the US sometime around the 1960's. The people of the ship live out their lives under the hopes their children will someday colonize a neighboring star system. It's an interesting gimmick, so it's a bit of a downer when the plot twist reveal deflates all excitement about the premise. What begins as an interesting space drama ends up being a psych experiment. Worst, the show ends on a huge 'What just happened?' moment. I imagine this would have been explained more if the show received a second season. One interesting thing Ascension had going for it was that it tried to reflect how an island society from mid 20th century America would still exist without the social advancements that have occurred since then. Society on Ascension has rigidly maintained the ideals, acceptable prejudices and social stratification of the 1960's America. But even that was toned down enough to where it wouldn't distract from the rest of the story. While it isn't terrible, Ascension is an example of a show with an interesting premise that probably would have worked better as a book.

Spoiler Alert!
Billed as a century long journey through space it’s really a day time soap opera/”Mad Men” sexy drama, murder mystery, spy thriller, government conspiracy, and sci fantasy. Lacking any science it is only fiction. The below average acting is also disappointing. The bigger plot holes were brilliant scientists never questioning earth-like gravity with 60’s technology, and bio-sphere condtions not collapsing like the real experiment. Avoid this turkey.

Clever, (if hard to believe) premise that in the 60's there was a secret space mission with 100 passengers to a new planet in a faraway galaxy that might take generations, goes unrealized from my point of view. Pretty amateurish acting doesn't help, but hard to get past the initial disbelief that this could have been conceived.of and actually accomplished 50-60 years ago.
