For the first time Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles are available in the United States in quality paperback editions. Second in the legendary Lymond Chronicles , Queen's Play follows Frances Crawford of Lymond who has been abruptly called into the service of Mary Queen of Scots. Though she is only a little girl, the Queen is already the object of malicious intrigues that extend from her native country to the court of France. It is to France that Lymond must travel, exercising his sword hand and his agile wit while also undertaking the most unlikely of masquerades, all to make sure that his charge's royal person stays intact. 7 year old Mary, Queen of Scots has been living in France for two years, in hopes that she can be wed to the French Dauphin, her cousin. Mary's mother has stayed in Scotland to protect that kingdom from the English. Now it's stable enough she feels she can visit her daughter for several months. But she wants with her a spy the French won't suspect--she wants Lymond. He agrees, but only as a free agent. He knows he has many enemies in France, both among the French and among the Scots who will travel with the Queen Dowager. He also knows the Queen Dowager would put so many restrictions on him that he couldn't do the job. France is very different from Scotland, and the persona Lymond creates for himself is very different from the man we'd seen two years before in Scotland. An exciting, swashbuckling read.
