Meet a flamingo of a different stripe! "Mama, why are we pink?" asks an ever-curious young flamingo named Sylvie. Like Leo Lionni's chameleon in A Color of His Own , Sylvie comes to learn that being yourself is the best thing to be. When she learns that it's due to the little pink brine shrimp they eat, Sylvie takes the maxim "You are what you eat!" to a whole new level. Her new diet leads to some very interesting new looks--from scarlet to stripey to positively purple! From the Hardcover edition.

Sylvie by Jennifer Sattler is the story of a flamingo who isn't afraid to ask the tough questions like, "why are we pink?" It's a question that leads to a wild adventure in color. According to Sylvie's mama flamingoes are pink because of the pink shrimp they eat. This gives Sylvie the brilliant idea to try eating other things to see what happens. Fabulous color wackiness is what happens! She starts with the basics, a nice green leaf turns her vivid green and grapes turn her "positively purple". Then a baby wanders by with a lovely orange and white striped towel dragging behind and it makes Sylvie wonder what stripes taste like... "rather stripy" in case you're wondering. By the time she's done with her feast of colors she's been paisley, flowery, red, blue and brown! And she's also sick to her stomach and looks kind of weird (but very colorful). "Sylvie didn't feel like Sylvie at all." When her family wanders past in their pink splendor Sylvie decides to go back to eating pink shrimp with a few frills now and then for dessert. The final picture in the book captures Sylvie's personality perfectly and will make kids laugh right out loud.
This is author/illustrator Jennifer Sattler's first picture book and she's off to a great start.
