The two-time Hugo Award-winner expands the universe of his Coyote saga. The danui, a reclusive arachnid species considered the galaxy's finest engineers, have avoided contact with the Coyote Federation. Until, that is, the danui initiate trade negotiations, offering only information: the coordinates for an unoccupied world suitable for human life-a massive sphere, composed of billions of hexagons. But when the Federation's recon mission goes terribly wrong, the humans realize how little they know about their new partners...

I really liked the first 3 books of the Coyote series, but I think that the quality has gone down after the aliens showed up. This book has some cool ideas, but the behaviour of some of the characters, particularly the captain of the Coyote ship and her Explorer Corps son, is just mind-bogglingly insane.

This is a great, sweeping science fiction epic. The world he creates is full fascinating, the characters are rounded (not stereoypes), and the use of multiple POVs works nicely to move the story along.

The pacing is good, and the story gets more intense as it goes.

If you enjoy science fiction, you'll probably really like this. It has enough details to appeal to fans of "hard" science fiction, while keeping enough of the storytelling and focus on characters to appeal to fans of "soft" science fiction.

Not nearly as good as the earlier Coyote novels. The first contact team has to be one of the most arrogant, self-centred, impatient and least intelligent in fiction. It is very irritating to have so many of the plot elements that could have been avoided by having the characters waiting a few hours.

Some interesting ideas in the world building, including of course, Hex.
