McGlue is in the hold, too drunk from the night before to be sure of name or situation or orientation--he may have killed a man. That man may have been his best friend. Intolerable memory accompanies sobriety. A sail on the seas of literary tradition, Moshfegh gives us a nasty heartless blackguard, a knife-sharp voyage through the fogs of recollection.

A beautifully vicious little book. Stunning prose. Moshfegh does not pull punches, and she pulls off a pretty incredible trick: turning a character you dislike at the outset to one you slightly sympathize with.

Not an easy read, but short, a decent first effort about a marginal character.

I just couldn't get into this book. I tried a couple of times, but it was just....weird! I gave it 1/2 star and that's generous.
