Two beautiful women have been found strangled in the studio of a well-known London artist. To investigator William Monk and his wife, Hester, the murders are a nightmare. One of the victims is the wife of Hester's cherished colleague, surgeon Dr. Kristian Beck, a Viennese émigré who becomes the prime suspect. With an intensity born of desperation, the Monks seek evidence that will save Dr. Beck from the hangman. From London's sinister slums to the crowded coffeehouses of Vienna, where embers of the revolution still burn in the hearts of freedom-loving men and women, Hester and Monk seek to penetrate not only the mystery of Elissa Beck's death but the riddle of her life.

Kristian Beck's wife Elissa has been a shadow in the background. In this outing she is murdered and her personality becomes a major factor in finding the culprit. Rathbone's out of the country, and Elissa's father, also a barrister, volunteers to defend his son-in-law, giving a different tone to the story. So do three other issues. Kristian and Elissa met in Vienna when both were leaders the 1848 revolution. When they married and moved to London, she became bored with the domestic round and found a damaging outlet for that boredom. So, coincidentally, did Hester's sister-in-law. Seeking information to clear Kristian, who's been arrested, Monk goes to Vienna. He learns a lot, but not sufficient to clear Kristian. The ending comes entirely out of the blue, yet makes perfect sense in retrospect. One of the best.

Very surprising ending but leaves you hanging to find out what happens to all the main characters. Guess I need to get the next book in this series.
