This story is an unusual take on Christmas. The gingerbread has been left out for Santa's snack on Christmas Eve. But the cookie is very scared of being eaten. He knows it is his duty, but he isn't sure he can face it. He is distracted for a little while by two rambunctious puppies, but Santa does eventually come. Seeing what a great help the gingerbread man is, Santa recruits him as a helper. No eating necessary.

The illustrations in this story are gorgeous, larger than life, colorful and entertaining. The story is a bit unusual and some sensitive children may be disturbed by the cookie's distressing thoughts of being eaten. It is perhaps not the most positive aspect to be brought forth in a Christmas story. The rhyming of the story struggles in some places. But overall, the story is good simple fun especially since the gingerbread man gets his wish to not be eaten.
