Born in the heart of Kentucky, Ty Mattson never knew his parents. His mother died in childbirth while his father fought in the Mexican War. For seventeen years, Ty never knew why his father didn't return. But when he receives news that his father is alive -- in the forces of General John Morgan -- Ty sets off to join him and Morgan's Raiders. When the bullets of a Confederate assassin divide father and son again, Ty Mattson must do what it takes to fight and survive.

I believe a teenager might enjoy the superficial cardboard cutout characters in this Woolard tome. The plot moves right along and the discerning reader could probably learn a little something about POW camps during the Civil War, about Morgan's raid, and not much else. Told from the perspective of a 17 year old I suppose there's not a lot to be expected in terms of insights nor original thoughts and experiences. Unfortunately, if a reader believes this book is ok anything written by Louis L'Amour probably qualifies as the Great American Novel.
