"I've had many faces. Many lives. I don't admit to all of them. There's one life I've tried very hard to forget-the Doctor who fought in the Time War."

The Great Time War has raged for centuries, ravaging the universe. The Daleks and the Time Lords deploy ever more dangerous weapons in desperate attempts at victory, but there is no end in sight.
On the outer rim of the Tantalus Eye, scores of human colony planets are now overrun by Dalek occupation forces. A weary, angry Doctor leads a flotilla of Battle TARDISes against the Dalek stronghold but in the midst of the carnage, the Doctor's TARDIS crashes to a planet below: Moldox.
As the Doctor is trapped in an apocalyptic landscape, Dalek patrols roam amongst the wreckage, rounding up the remaining civilians. But why haven't the Daleks simply killed the humans?
Searching for answers, the Doctor meets 'Cinder', a young Dalek hunter. Their struggles to discover the Dalek plan take them from the ruins of Moldox to the halls of Gallifrey and set in chain events that will change everything. And everyone.

Excellent War Doctor novel that takes place just before Day of the Doctor (from the War Doctor's perspective). As stated below, this story bridges the gap between the classic series (1963-1989; 1996) and the new series (2005-present) well. With out giving away too many spoilers, it has several ties to "The Five Doctors" and "The End of Time". A favorite villain makes a big appearence in a central role and the Daleks are handled well. This has been my second reading and I've found that recently listening to the Only the Monstrous and Infernal Devices audio box sets from Big Finish (also in the WCLS catalog) helped cement the War Doctor's voice in my head better than just Day of the Doctor alone. I remember in my first reading, his voice kept shifting between John Hurt, Tom Baker and Paul McGann. This time was better. All in all an excellent read and a must for anyone wanting a better look into the Time War.

Awesome story that clarifies come of what happened during the gap between the original TV series and the reboot. An interesting look at the events that are often referred to and have shaped the doctor's character.

...'You really ARE insane.' The Doctor laughed. 'I like to think so.'
