Though Georgia belle Susanna Anders agrees to accompany her father on a silver prospecting trip to Colorado, her heart belongs to the South. Then charming cowboy Nate Northam saves her father's life and gives them shelter at his ranch. Feeling gratitude is only natural, but falling for a Yankee? Both of their families would be outraged. While Susanna's father recovers at the Northams' home, Nate can't help being drawn to the sweet Southern beauty and wishing he were free to think of courtship. That is until shocking revelations compel both Nate and Susanna to choose where their loyalties lie--fettered to the past or to the promise of a bold new love.

Susanna Anders agrees to accompany her father on a silver prospecting trip to Colorado and it is during the trip that her father is robbed, almost beaten to death, and left to die among their scattered belongings. Susanna was gone fetching water over the hill while this happened so she is okay. Nate comes along and ends up helping them. He has gone to pick up some china dishes for his mother's surprise present and finds Susanna's father. He offers to help them and they end up getting taken to his family's property. As her father recovers, Susanna and he stay at the Northam's home. The problem is that Nate is a Yankee and she isn't. But despite this Susanna and Nate enjoy teasing each other and talking to each other. The second problem isn't just where each of them come from -- it is that Nate's father has decided that he is going to marry another girl and also that Nate's father does not seem to like Susanna at all.

So both know they can't be with each other but can't seem to stop liking each other and finding ways to talk or be with each other. Neither of them will admit that they like each other.

"Go ahead, Nate." Rosamond stretched out her boot and kicked his boot. "Kiss her." Susanna gasped softly as both she and Nate pulled away from each other and shot worried glances toward the Colonel. Across the wagon, Rand and Rosamond laughed softly as if they were in on a great secret. A secret Susanna refused to admit to herself. She would not fall in love with Nate Northam. She would not!

Great book! As soon as I started reading it -- I had a hard time putting it down. I finished it one day - it took me about 3 hours to read it.
