"[B]egins when a young woman disappears from the frozen fjords of Iceland. In her wake, this woman has left a tempest of lies, betrayal and revenge. Decades later, somewhere in the same wilderness, Detective Erlendur is on the hunt. He is looking for the missing woman but also for his long-lost brother, whose disappearance in a snowstorm when they were children has coloured his entire life. Slowly, the past begins to surrender its secrets. But as Erlendur uncovers a story about the limits of human endurance, he realizes that many people would prefer their crimes to stay buried" -- from publisher's web site.

Rather dark but I enjoyed this book. Main character and his situation were complicated but all was eventually revealed. Unusual setting and personalities add to the book's attraction.

What I would call an "OK time waster". Not as good as previous books by same author. Didn't finish the book.

Unfortunately, as with the last installment Black Skies, the author seems to have lost a critical edge in this series and is floundering in "writers Horse Latitudes". While earlier novels like Voices, The Silence of the Grave and The Draining Lake were intricately plotted, vividly atmospheric and masterful in the development of complex characters in modern day Icelandic society, Indridason appears to have plateaued and be waiting for some kind of rejuvination. Intrigue has been replaced by soap operish scenarios and maudlin dialogue. Hopefully he can right the ship and steer these intricate characters and wonderfully unique Icelandic settings back on a forward course in the next outing.
