This was a very practical version of Black Widow, who is tough and cool, (and actually wears a decent costume!) She frequently tells the reader and other characters that she is a cold-hearted person. This proves to not be entirely true, though her job mostly consists of her killing bad guys. She has compassion on her abused neighbor, and eventually takes pity on a stray cat and adopts it, realizing that "Sometimes...you need someone else." Which was cool, because she learns to shut others out less. She also acknowledges her mistakes and learns from them.

Pretty but boring. Lots of fighting, lots of bitter reflection. The bitterness felt... inelegant? Like repetition rather than deepening. There are mysteries, but they don't allow the reader to participate, nor do they allow the reader to admire Black Widow's intelligence.

Really gorgeous art, though, oh my goodness. If you like the genre, this may be worth it just for that.

I REALLY love this series. This is what happens when both the writer and the artists are outstanding storytellers. They don't need lots of words or overly elaborate layouts. This series is the antidote to big event comics that mean little to nothing once they are done being read (and sometimes while they are being read).

An outstanding kick off to a solo series featuring the Black Widow, the spy and Avenger. Edmondson has an exceptional take on the character, who is working in her own way to make amends for her past. The art by Phil Noto has a dreamlike quality that serves the story well.

read this in singles form and if they do make a movie, they should use this as a reference. Excellent!
