is much along the lines of "the child thief", but it does not matter.
Mr. Smith writes such interesting and thoughtful period pieces with intrique and suspense that you are held in a state of wanting to go to the end of the book to find out the ending.
some people might find him a little slow off the mark but stay with it, you'll find you can't put the book down.

Tight, taut suspense, set against the background of a disintegrated, nihilistic Russia as the Communists tried to solidify their hold. Well-drawn characters and a good story too.

I enjoyed this book - maybe not as much as his first book ' the child thief.' but read it in a couple of days which attests to its interest. Certainly worth the time.
